  • ALFALFAS

The importance of alfalfa cannot be overestimated. It is considered the most outstanding forage plant due to its capacity for building soil fertility and furnishing large yields of high quality feed for livestock. Alfalfa hay rated highest in feed value of any of the common hay crops. It has a high protein and mineral content and as a supplier of calcium it is superior to any other forage crop. Alfalfa is an excellent source of Vitamin A. Alfalfa makes an excellent hog pasture, and grown with brome grass, int. wheatgrass, timothy, etc., makes for a good pasture for cattle and sheep.
Since 1959 alfalfa research has advanced rapidly and today more than three hundred varieties have been introduced to meet the needs of alfalfa growers from coast to coast.
COYOTE SEEDS is striving to give growers the benefits of that research by supplying the best of these alfalfas. In the pages that follow, you will find information on alfalfa varieties and blends available from COYOTE SEEDS.

  • CLOVERS

    Sweetclover

Sweetclover is the most efficient of all common legumes for rebuilding depleted soil nitrogen. Tremendous expansion in the use of sweetclover on Com Belt farms has occurred in the past decade. A normal stand of sweetclover will add from 80 to 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre or the equivalent of 8 to 10 tons of barn manure per acre. Its outstanding value as a pasture and soil improving crop, the relative cheapness of the seed and the ease with which it may be fitted into established cropping systems have all contributed to its widespread use.

Featured Crops

Rye

Rye is a cold-tolerant grain that geminates in cool soil (34-40° F), making it a major fall-planted cover crop for winter erosion control. The top growth provides soil cover and suppresses weed.

Field Peas

Field peas are used in spring plantings as a source of organic matter and nitrogen.  In late summer, peas can be interseeded with oats to provide ground cover over the winter.

Forage Turnip and Rapeseed

Turnip and rape grow quickly and are good at reducing surface compaction while providing winter cover and fall weed suppression.

Oats

Spring-planted oats are used for green manure, while fall-planted oats provide winter-killed ground cover. They are also useful as a nurse crop with legumes, such as hairy vetch and peas, for forage, erosion control and weed suppression.

Buckwheat

Buckwheat is a short season annual with a delicate, fibrous root system. Since it establishes quickly, it is useful for weed suppression. It also mellows the soil while improving aggregate stability. It is a scavenger of phosphorus and calcium and mineralizes rock phosphate, making these nutrients available for later crops.

Sundangrass & Sorghum-Sudangrass

Sudangrass and sorghum-sudangrass are midsummer grasses suitable for short, 8-10 week plantings. These crops provide abundant root biomass, which is useful for increasing soil organic matter. Mowing encourages root growth. They suppress root knot nematodes and inhibit weed germination if densely sown.
